Eight parties sign peace accord in Kano

Eight political parties on Wednesday in Kano signed a peace accord to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections.

The eight political parties that signed the peace accord are the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Action Democratic Congress, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party and Action Democratic Party.

At the signing ceremony, the Head of the Secretariat of the Peace Committee, Ibrahim Waiya, said the eight political parties signed the peace accord to get involved in advocacy for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

He said they are an independent peace architecture working with the national peace committee and appealing to the conscience of the governorship candidates.

He said what they signed is a commitment and a commitment goes, with a pledge and a pledge is an obligation.

The event was co-chaired by Emeritus Prof Ibrahim Umar and the Catholic Bishop of Kano, Bishop John Niyiring.

In an interview, Niyiring said that signing of a peace accord is not a joke, it must be respected, and they are morally bound to abide by what they have signed, to maintain peace, as well as work peacefully with their supporters.
