Industry body Water UK said a new planned programme of works would represent the biggest modernisation of sewers since the Victorian era.

Industry body Water UK said that the campaigners were right to be upset about the current quality of their rivers and beaches, as it announced the package of investment on Thursday - which it claimed would be the biggest modernisation of sewers since the Victorian era.

A string of recent high-profile incidents, including a sewage discharge at picturesque beach in Cornwall, have fuelled disgust over the issue.

While addressing the public, Water UK's chair said that the message from the water and sewage industry is clear and that they are deeply sorry. She also said that the extra 10billion euros will be spent this decade to clean up their act, with details published later this summer.
