Amos Alao, the President of the Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria (SLAN), discussed with Victor Gbonegun how the increased radiation from the sun has compelled landscape architects to design and build gardens on rooftops of buildings. He also emphasized the pressing need for green infrastructure to alleviate tidal flooding caused by climate change.
The Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria (SLAN), established in 2003, has been actively involved in promoting education and the practice of landscape architecture in Nigeria ever since.
According to Alao, there are only about 100 registered landscape architects in the country. Efforts are being made to integrate landscape architects who were educated abroad (the pioneers) with those who received their education in Nigeria in recent years. Currently, a significant number of landscape architects and technicians trained locally are ready to raise awareness and advocate for inclusivity.
