On Sunday morning, a group of Yoruba Nation agitators seized Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM 99.1 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and took over the broadcast for over an hour.

According to a souce from The PUNCH Metro, the agitators arrived at the station around 5:40 am in an 18-seater bus, armed with dangerous weapons and charms. They threatened to deal decisively with any staff member who refused to cooperate.

However, the police, with the assistance of the Nigerian army, managed to arrest four of the agitators, including a woman, while others scattered in different directions to avoid capture.

One of the arrested agitators, who had sustained gunshot wounds, rushed into the studio to inform others that security operatives had taken control of the station. Blood stains were visible in the studio.

An investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that the agitators initially held some night duty staff and security guards hostage. They then took over the studio and announced live on radio, "Welcome to Yoruba Nation" .

A reliable source further stated that they continued to threaten staff members, demanding the removal of all Nigerian flags in the station and their replacement with Yoruba Nation flags, as they had already taken over the Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan.

It was also learned that they initially hijacked some commercial vehicles (Micra) to block the main road.

During our correspondent's visit to the station at J&P Bus-stop, Moniya in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, more than 20 operational vehicles of security agents, including the Department of State Services, were strategically stationed to prevent any untoward incidents.

Confirming the invasion, Ajayi Omotola, the most senior staff member on duty, stated, They identified themselves as Yoruba Nation agitators, and the inscription was also on their T-shirts. Only six individuals entered the studio with various charms, threatening to kill us if we failed to cooperate. Others were stationed outside, providing security at different areas within the premises.

They confiscated our phones and warned us not to make any noise or calls. They wanted to broadcast live that Yoruba Nation had taken over. They instructed us to remove all Nigerian flags from the studio and replace them with their own. They did not allow anyone to leave. The Area Commander arrived, addressed them, and even pleaded with them, but they ignored him. Later, we heard sporadic gunshots outside. One of our staff members came inside to inform us that the police and soldiers had arrived, Omotola emphasized.

At the time of press, normalcy had been restored, but vigilant security operatives continued to guard the station.

The PUNCH Metro reports that the radio station was established on October 10, 2007, and began broadcasting in pure and undiluted Yoruba language on October 22 of the same year.
