Nine people, including four soldiers, lost their lives on Sunday evening when a civilian plane crashed in Sudan due to technical reasons, as the country's ongoing war entered its 100th day.
The conflict has resulted in over 3,900 casualties since April 15, with battles between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), headed by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Moreover, more than 2.6 million people, mainly from Khartoum, have been internally displaced, creating a dire humanitarian situation.
The suburbs of the capital, Khartoum, have been severely affected by the war, leaving millions trapped in their homes, and some without access to basic necessities like water and food. In one war-devastated district, residents have been surviving on just one meal a day, and many are now facing the threat of hunger.
Abbas Mohammed Babiker, a resident from Khartoum North, expressed the urgent need for food donations to help families like his, stating that they only have enough food for two more days. Sadly, there have already been reports of people succumbing to hunger, with a local musician in Khartoum North being among the victims.
Port Sudan, located on the east coast and relatively spared by the war, also faced a tragic incident when an Antonov plane crashed, killing nine individuals. A child miraculously survived the crash. Due to the ongoing conflict, Port Sudan airport remains the only operational airport in the country.
The war's impact on the local economy has been devastating, with a significant disruption to markets and a lack of money among residents. The United Nations' World Food Programme reported that even before the war began, about one-third of the population already faced hunger. The situation has further deteriorated, with thousands struggling to access food and essential supplies.
Local pro-democracy neighborhood groups, such as the resistance committee, have been stepping up to support their communities by issuing emergency appeals for aid. These committees emphasize the importance of supporting each other, providing food, money, and assistance to those in need.
The dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan calls for immediate action and international aid to address the hunger and displacement affecting millions of innocent civilians caught in the midst of the prolonged conflict.
