World Mosquito Day, commemorated on 20th August each year, serves as a global reminder of the devastating impact mosquitoes have on public health, particularly in tropical regions. In Nigeria, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN), in collaboration with the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), is taking significant strides to combat the mosquito-borne menace. The theme for this year's program is "Fighting the World's Deadliest Killer - The Mosquito," focusing on raising awareness and engaging in mosquito control activities.
Saturday 19th August, 2023: Health Awareness Road Walk and Mosquito Control Activities
- The commemoration kicks off with a Health Awareness Road Walk across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Participants from various sectors will join hands to march for a common cause – fighting the world's deadliest killer. The walk will culminate in Mosquito Control activities, where volunteers and experts will conduct measures to reduce mosquito populations. Furthermore, the initiative emphasizes distributing free Mosquito Control Products to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja, providing much-needed protection to vulnerable communities.
Monday 21st August, 2023: Technical Session, Symposium, Exhibition, and Awards
The second day of the event promises a series of informative and interactive sessions. At the Executive Hall, Abuja International Conference Centre, experts and stakeholders will engage in a Technical Session and Symposium. Distinguished speakers will discuss the latest research findings, effective mosquito control strategies, and innovative approaches to combat the mosquito-borne diseases plaguing the nation.
The Exhibition will showcase cutting-edge technologies, products, and services from pest control providers and related industries. This platform will offer visitors valuable insights into available solutions to protect against mosquito-borne illnesse.
Additionally, the event will recognize outstanding contributions in the field of mosquito control with Awards for individuals and organizations making a difference in the fight against these deadly insects.
Guest Lecturer: Prof. Godson Ana R.E.E.
An esteemed authority in Environmental Health, Prof. Godson Ana R.E.E., the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Ibadan, will grace the event as the Guest Lecturer. His vast knowledge and expertise will undoubtedly enrich the discourse on mosquito control and public health interventions in Africa.
