Pope cautions about potential AI risks

Pope Francis has urged for a global contemplation of the potential perils posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), acknowledging the technology's "disruptive possibilities and mixed effects." Despite his own unfamiliarity with computers, the 86-year-old pontiff issued this cautionary statement in preparation for the upcoming World Day of Peace within the Catholic Church, observed on New Year's Day. The Vatican adhered to its customary practice of releasing the message well in advance.

In his message, the pope emphasizes the necessity for vigilance to prevent the propagation of violence and discrimination through the creation and application of such AI devices, especially at the expense of vulnerable and marginalized individuals. The statement also underscores the pressing requirement to responsibly shape the concept and use of artificial intelligence, ensuring it serves humanity's interests and safeguards our shared environment. This ethical consideration, the message states, should encompass realms of education and legislation.

Although Pope Francis admitted his lack of tech prowess in 2015, he also recognized digital tools like the internet, social networks, and text messages as "gifts of God," as long as they are employed wisely. In 2020, the Vatican collaborated with tech giants Microsoft and IBM to champion ethical AI development and advocate for the regulation of intrusive technologies such as facial recognition.
