The National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Council (NANS JCC) in Lagos State has decided to postpone their planned protest against the increased fees at UNILAG, following the involvement of Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa.

In a statement released by the association's Chairman, Mr. Alimi Idris, and Secretary, Mr. Abdulrazak Yusuf, on Tuesday, they thanked the commissioner for his intervention and urged him to ensure that the students' concerns are conveyed to the appropriate authorities.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the commissioner engaged in discussions with student leaders on Monday, where they initially intended to hold a demonstration on Tuesday but were invited by the commissioner for dialogue. During this meeting, the commissioner assured the students that he would meet with the Vice Chancellor of the university to address their grievances.

Additionally, a Police-Student Relations Committee (PSRC) was established to handle potential future issues arising from the meeting. One of the students in the delegation, an indigent student, was granted a scholarship by the CP during his university education, which contributed to the decision to suspend the protest and maintain campus peace.

The university had earlier announced a fee increase on July 20, 2023, raising undergraduate fees to N190,250 for medicine students and N140,250 for courses involving laboratories and studios.
