WEMA Bank has unveiled plans to empower 10,000 young women by offering comprehensive support and training across diverse business sectors and vocations.
The initiative, in collaboration with the Entrepreneurial Development Centre of Pan-Atlantic University and Mastercard, aims to foster inclusivity, align with Sustainable Development Goals, and create viable employment opportunities for the dynamic youth population. This move is expected to drive positive transformations for individuals, businesses, and families across the nation.
This was disclosed at an event tagged: “Transforming Nigerian Youth Programme,” held at Wema Bank headquarters, Lagos. Tunde Mabawonku, WEMA Bank's Executive Director for Retail and Digital Business, expressed the bank's pride in taking on the role of catalysts for this initiative, igniting the potential for growth and progress.
Ayodele Olojede, Divisional Head of Retail and Small and Medium Enterprise at Wema Bank, highlighted that this collaboration is designed to empower female customers by enhancing their skills, unlocking their potential, improving employability, and ultimately equipping them to excel as entrepreneurs. Olojede explained that the partnership would provide complimentary training led by experienced professionals from Pan-Atlantic University's Entrepreneurial Development Centre for 10,000 female business owners who are valued customers of Wema Bank.
Out of these participants, 50 individuals will have the opportunity to become certified Business Development Support Providers through SMEDAN. Additionally, the bank will extend grants and seed funding of up to N500,000 to selected entrepreneurs, helping them translate their learning into tangible business success.
Nneka Okekerau, Director at EDC (Enterprise Development Centre), emphasized that the training covers various sectors including creative, digital, and agribusiness. She stressed the importance of a shift in mindset to achieve positive and impactful outcomes.
