News Update
Published on 08/23/2023

The Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) is advocating for the implementation of rigorous regulatory frameworks to ensure the safety and effectiveness of private sector initiatives aimed at mosquito control strategies within the country.

Olakunle Williams, the National President of PECAN, who serves as a Pest Control Officer, stressed the importance of such frameworks in preventing unintended environmental repercussions and health hazards.

Speaking during a symposium in Abuja to commemorate "World Mosquito Day" and its theme "Fighting the World's Deadliest Killer – The Mosquito," Williams delivered a presentation titled "Prospects and Challenges in Private Sector Driven Mosquito Control Interventions in Public Health."

Williams highlighted the ongoing global threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases to public health. He underscored the significance of private sector involvement in mosquito control, as it has the potential to bring innovation, efficiency, and resources to combat these diseases.

He emphasized that effective and sustainable mosquito control strategies can be achieved through collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors, guided by robust governance and ethical considerations.

He acknowledged the benefits of private sector-driven interventions, including enhanced supply chains and streamlined management for more effective delivery of mosquito control measures. However, he also pointed out potential challenges related to profit motives, equitable access, regulation, data privacy, community engagement, and long-term sustainability.

Williams highlighted the need for private sector initiatives to align with the primary objective of safeguarding public health. He further noted that community participation and cooperation were essential for successful mosquito control.

He also stressed the importance of transparent communication and collaboration with local communities to establish trust and gain support for private sector-driven interventions.
