Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja Archdiocese has instructed Catholic institutions and parishes in Abuja to undertake tree planting efforts to safeguard the environment.
During the launch of the Tree Planting/Growing Campaign by the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Abuja Archdiocese, Kaigama emphasized the importance of environmental preservation.
He cited the positive impact of trees in providing sustenance and fresh air, echoing Pope Francis's teachings. Kaigama shared that the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has mandated tree planting across dioceses, setting a minimum target of 20,000 trees per diocese.
Given the numerous institutions within the archdiocese, Kaigama expressed optimism in exceeding this target. He encouraged everyone to plant a minimum of 10 trees in various locations, with the aim of fostering gratitude and responsibility toward the environment. Kaigama highlighted the potential of tree planting to address challenges such as herders/farmers conflicts.
He concluded by envisioning tree planting becoming a widespread lifestyle practice, paralleling the spread of gospel messages. Mr. Yussuf Idris, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, emphasized trees' role as the Earth's lungs and urged collective efforts to combat deforestation and climate change.
Josephat Abaagu, Chairman of JDPC-Abuja, underscored the significance of protecting the Earth and combating climate change through tree planting.
Edozie Abazie, Project Director of the Catholic Agency for Oversea Development (CAfOD), noted the importance of tree planting in mitigating climate change and introduced a partnership with JDPC to produce eco-friendly energy through tree preservation. The collaboration also includes the planting of 1,000 trees in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
