The Cameroonian Government has notified Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) about their plan to open the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River due to heavy rainfall and rising water levels.

The Ministry of African Affairs in Cameroon, represented by Umar Salisu, conveyed this decision to NEMA. The intention behind this move is to prevent potential flooding in Nigeria caused by the release of water from the dam.

The Ministry urged NEMA to take immediate preventive actions, including informing residents of the affected regions and minimizing the impact of the released water. According to Salisu, the release of water will be carefully controlled to avoid extensive damage.

The Ministry emphasized that they received a formal communication from the Cameroonian authorities, outlining their approach to managing the dam's water release. The Cameroonian government will gradually release small amounts of water to mitigate the risk of damage along the Benue River basin in both Cameroon and Nigeria.

The Ministry called upon NEMA to proactively address the situation by educating the local populace and taking necessary precautions. Residents in the vulnerable areas were advised to stay composed and follow the guidelines provided by the authorities.
