The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that flood has caused significant destruction in Cheledi Community, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State. According to Mr. Adamu Nayola, the agency's Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, the disaster occurred as a result of heavy rainfall causing rivers to overflow their banks.
Nayola noted that more than 700 houses and farmlands were devastated in Cheledi Community, resulting in the destruction of crops such as rice, maize, sorghum, millet, sesame seeds, and cowpea. This incident is described as the most severe disaster in the state this year.
The flood left numerous residents homeless, prompting the Commissioners for Humanitarian Affairs, Housing, and Environment to visit the affected area for damage assessment and assistance distribution. The majority of the affected villages were situated along the stream's banks, exacerbating the impact of the flood.
SEMA is currently conducting a comprehensive enumeration of the affected properties to facilitate the distribution of relief materials. Nayola advised the public to steer clear of flood-prone areas and avoid obstructing waterways with structures to prevent future flooding.
