A New Strike is Imminent as the NLC's Ultimatum Ends Today
09/22/2023 06:55 in News Update

As the ultimatum given by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the Federal Government regarding the removal of fuel subsidy expires today, the NLC leadership plans to meet next week to decide when to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike.

However, there have been meetings involving Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima and government officials to avert the strike. Minister of Finance Wale Edun and Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong, along with the Vice President, are working on a package, including wage awards, to present to the NLC leadership.

The NLC had previously conducted a two-day warning strike and issued a 21-day ultimatum to address the suffering and hardship caused by the subsidy removal. If nothing substantial is done by today, critical NLC organs will meet to decide on the strike's commencement.

While it's not confirmed whether the strike will begin immediately, it remains a possibility, and government officials are working to address the situation and prevent further industrial action.
