Rising Prices of Sachet Water Drive Nigerians towards Unhealthy Alternatives
03/18/2024 17:30 in News Update

In recent months, the cost of sachet water, known as 'pure water,' has sharply risen, leading Nigerians to seek alternative options that health professionals warn may carry substantial health hazards.

The sachet water price which was N5 in the early 2000s rose through N10, N20, N30 and now N50 per sachet. Bottled water, which was formerly N50, currently sells for N200 per bottle.

The Association of Pure Water Producers recently voiced worries about the steep increase in prices of sachets of pure water, cautioning that without immediate action, the cost could reach N100.

According to reports, certain members of the association attributed the price hike to the elevated expenses of fuel, nylon, and electricity. However, experts countered this claim, stating that there was no justification for the sachet water price increase, as most producers already owned their machinery. They pointed out that numerous manufacturers were citing exchange rates or production costs as reasons for price hikes.

The citizens then urged the government to establish price control boards to regulate commodity prices across the country.
