Three Nigerian boxers, Zainab Adeshina, Ifeanyi Onyekwere, and Shukurah Kareem, have advanced to the semi-finals of their respective weight categories at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Ifeanyi Onyekwere secured his place in the semi-finals after defeating Keddy Evans of Seychelles in the men’s 92+kg division with a unanimous points decision of 5-0.
Zainab Adeshina exhibited her skill in the women’s 50kg category, defeating Mathiba Thandolwethu Truelove of South Africa with an impressive points decision of 5-0 in the quarter-finals.
Shukurah Kareem secured her spot in the semi-finals by defeating Sierra Leone’s Sara Haghighat-Joo 4-1 in the women’s 54kg quarter-finals. Adeshina and Onyekwere competed on Sunday, while Kareem's bout was on Monday.
Their victories guarantee Adeshina, Onyekwere, and Kareem at least a bronze medal at the Games, showcasing exceptional performances.
National team coach Tony Konyegwachie expressed confidence in his boxers' ability to win gold medals, emphasizing the importance of avoiding external interference.
