In preparation for the November 16, 2024 governorship election in Ondo State, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled its timetable and agenda outlining the process for selecting a candidate by April 25, 2024.
The APC's timetable, issued late Monday and signed by the party's National Organizing Secretary, Sulaimon Argungu, outlines key dates for the Ondo State governorship election. The sale of nomination forms, expression of interest, and delegates' forms for candidates will commence on April 3 and conclude on April 10, 2024. The primary election is scheduled for April 25, 2024. Mirroring its approach in the Edo State governorship primary, where Monday Okpebholo emerged as the candidate, the APC has set the price for Expression of Interest and Nomination forms at N10 million and N40 million respectively for Ondo State.
Among the prominent contenders vying for the APC ticket in Ondo State are Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and former Ondo deputy governor, who assumed office following the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on December 27, 2023. Additionally, Wale Akinterinwa, a former Commissioner for Finance in the state, and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South, are also seeking the party's nomination.
Ondo and Edo are among the eight states where governorship elections are conducted off-season due to legal disputes and court rulings. The other states include Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, and Osun. Political heavyweights are already gearing up for the forthcoming elections in these states. While 19 political parties are expected to field candidates, the contests are anticipated to primarily feature two or three dominant candidates, mirroring previous elections.
