The National Security Adviser's Office has officially confirmed that Nadeem Anjarwalla, a detained executive from Binance, managed to escape from custody. Anjarwalla, who was under investigation for involvement in Binance's activities, reportedly fled on Friday. Earlier reports from PUNCH Online, citing Premium Times, had also highlighted Anjarwalla's escape on the same day.
Zakari Mijinyawa, the Head of Strategic Communication at the ONSA, released a statement confirming the incident. According to Mijinyawa, preliminary investigations indicate that Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding his escape. Those responsible for his custody have been apprehended, and a thorough inquiry is underway to understand the events leading to his flight from lawful detention.
The Nigerian government, like others globally, has been probing money laundering and terrorism financing on the Binance platform. Nadeem Anjarwalla, a British and Kenyan national serving as Binance's Africa regional manager, was undergoing trial in Nigerian courts until his escape during a 14-day remand order.
He was due to appear in court again on April 4, 2024. The statement calls on Nigerians and the international community to provide any information that could aid in his apprehension.
