On Wednesday, 27th November 2024, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) successfully hosted the 2024 Mandatory Continuous Development Training Programme (MCDTP) at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, Lagos. The event, which coincided with PECAN’s anniversary, attracted industry leaders, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders.

The training featured four critical topics, each presented by distinguished facilitators. Sanitarian Dr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba, Registrar and CEO of EHCON, opened the sessions with an in-depth discussion on navigating regulatory compliance and standards in pest control. He emphasized the importance of aligning government policies with the sector's needs, providing tax incentives, regulating pesticide use, and encouraging collaboration between stakeholders.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, represented by Mr. Lewis followed with a presentation on building resilience in pest control through effective risk management and crisis preparedness. He stressed the need for crisis management plans, emergency response procedures, communication strategies, and regular training exercises.

PCO Terungwa Abari, PECAN’s National Vice President and Abuja Chapter Chairman, highlighted the link between pest control and public health, calling for increased awareness to create a safer nation. He noted the role of NGOs in capacity building, community mobilization, and field-level interventions, and encouraged collaborative efforts across sectors.

Dr. Tade Adeniyi Olanrewaju, a leading veterinary expert, spoke on collaborative pest management, underscoring the value of working with agricultural stakeholders. He also advocated for the integration of modern technologies such as remote sensing, data analysis, and digital platforms to advance pest management practices.

Doctor Adebowale stressed the need to prioritize data retention, enhance training programs, and tackle stagnancy in Nigerian universities, which he identified as a major barrier to knowledge acquisition in the field.

The General Secretary of PECAN proudly announced the induction of 31 new members into the organization, each receiving their certificates of membership. This milestone reflects PECAN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the industry and build a network of skilled professionals.
