Rodents are interesting creatures. Interesting features, interesting to study and observe; and interestingly, they're the largest group of mammals with over 2200 species and constitute almost half the population of mammal species.
There's a whole range of them, from rats and mice, to Squirells, to Porcupines and Beavers. Rats and mice being the most common in relation to their closeness to human habitat. Surprisingly, years ago, Rodents avoided human interactions because early humans saw them as food. With the current civilized man of Agriculture and processed food, Rodents have become less of a prey and now see humans as a reliable source of shelter and feeding. They've lived with humans long enough and learnt some habits from us.
It's too pity they learnt the bad ones like taking 10 yards when given a yard. We made peace with them, welcomed them in, but now it seems they want to colonize our land, starting from our homes and farms. It could be pay back or pure rebellion.
*Did you know that Open teeth is not the same as diastema?*
Did you know that your sister who has a space in between her front teeth has a diastema not open teeth?
Who now has open teeth?
Rodents do!!!
Infact, they have both diastema and open teeth. Rodents have teeth that grow as long as they live. Humans don't!.
So, in another news; *No human being has a open teeth.* What we have are teeth that stop growing after a while- Closed teeth.
Rodents also have a gal between their front teeth and cheek teeth called a diastema.
Of all the rodents, Rats and mice are the closest to humans because of their genetic and behavioral abilities to adapt to man-made habitat and therefore, are the pests.
Curious to discover the difference between a rat and a mouse?
You'll see them under these features:
1 Size: An adult rat is bigger than an adult mouse and has longer feet.
2 . Tail: A rat has thick hairless tail while a mouse has a long slender tail covered with hair.
3 Droppings: The droppings of rats are banana shaped and about 10-20 mm long while that of mice have pointed ends and about 1-2 mm long.
4 Breeding: Rats give birth about 3-6 times a year and produce about 5-10 pups per birth.
Rodents give birth about 7-8 times a year and produce about 4-16 little ones per birth.
