Lagos, Nigeria - August 20, 2024: Lawal Halimat

On World Mosquito Day 2024, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) hosted a significant press conference and lecture aimed at ramping up efforts to combat malaria. The event took place at the PECAN National Secretariat, NUT Pavilion, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, drawing a diverse audience that included PECAN members, government officials, representatives from various sectors, and media personnel.

The Urgency of the Fight Against Malaria

In a passionate address, PCO Olakunle Williams, the National President of PECAN, emphasized the urgent need for intensified efforts to eliminate malaria. He highlighted Nigeria's disproportionate burden of malaria, which remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, accounting for nearly a quarter of all global malaria cases and deaths. This year's theme, "Accelerating the Fight Against Malaria for an Equitable World," reflects both the urgency of malaria eradication and the need to address the social inequities exacerbated by the disease.

The Historical Significance of World Mosquito Day

World Mosquito Day, observed annually on August 20, commemorates Sir Ronald Ross's groundbreaking discovery in 1897 of the female Anopheles mosquito as the vector for malaria. This discovery has been pivotal in developing targeted interventions to control mosquito populations and reduce malaria spread. Williams used this occasion to remind attendees of the deadly impact mosquitoes continue to have and the importance of sustained global efforts to combat them.

Highlights of the Event

The program commenced at 10 a.m. with an introduction by the event moderator, Mr. Ayodeji Oluleye DFortune. PCO Olakunle Williams delivered the keynote address, stressing the critical role of pest control in malaria prevention. His speech was followed by a lecture from Elder Michael Shomoye, who provided insights on effective strategies for mosquito control.

An interactive session allowed attendees to engage with PCO Olakunle Williams and Elder Shomoye, further emphasizing a holistic approach to malaria control. During the press conference, PECAN reiterated the need for collaborative efforts across sectors to tackle malaria's root cause—the mosquito.

Practical Demonstrations and Closing Remarks

The event included a practical demonstration on the correct use of fumigation gear and effective fumigation techniques, highlighting safety in mosquito control efforts. Mr. Amos Igbedi, PECAN's Committee Chairman on World Mosquito Day 2024, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants for their contributions to the success of the event. Mr. Niyi Oriade offered the closing prayer.

PECAN's Commitment and Future Actions

PECAN is committed to accelerating its efforts in several key areas, including:

  1. Promoting Integrated Vector Management (IVM): Using strategies like larviciding, indoor residual spraying (IRS), and insecticide-treated nets.
  2. Training and Capacity Building: Prioritizing the training of pest control professionals with the latest tools and knowledge.
  3. Advocacy and Awareness: Intensifying outreach to educate the public and policymakers about mosquito control.
  4. Collaboration with Stakeholders: Strengthening partnerships with government, international organizations, and the private sector.
  5. Advising on Sustainable Policies: Urging governments to adopt policies for effective mosquito control and waste management.

A Call for Equity

Williams concluded by linking the fight against malaria to broader issues of equity, noting that malaria disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, children under five, and those in rural areas. By accelerating efforts to combat malaria, Nigeria aims to build a more equitable world where everyone has the opportunity for a healthy, productive life.

World Mosquito Day 2024 served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing battle against malaria and the critical need for continued efforts to achieve a malaria-free future. PECAN remains dedicated to playing a pivotal role in this global fight, advocating for increased awareness, effective mosquito control, and malaria eradication in Nigeria and beyond.
