Bed Bug Awareness Week: Protecting Yourself from Bed Bug Infestations
Pest News
Published on 06/03/2023

The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) is gearing up to observe Bed Bug Awareness Week from June 4-10, as recognized by Chase's Calendar of Events. This initiative aims to educate the public on how to identify and prevent bed bug infestations, particularly when traveling. As people begin to embrace summer travel after the pandemic, it is crucial to raise awareness about these persistent pests and emphasize the importance of working with licensed pest control professionals for effective treatment.

  • Why Bed Bugs Are a Concern:

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood and are notorious for infesting homes, hotels, and other dwellings. They are excellent hitchhikers and can easily latch onto luggage, clothing, and personal belongings, making travel a prime opportunity for encountering these pests. Bed bug bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, and sleep disturbances. Infestations can be difficult to eliminate without professional intervention, making prevention and early detection essential.

  • Inspecting for Bed Bugs While Traveling:

To avoid bringing bed bugs home from your travels, it's crucial to conduct thorough inspections.

The PPMA recommends the following steps:

  1. Start by checking the headboard, mattress, and bedding for live bed bugs, blood stains, or dark excrement spots.
  2. Examine the furniture, including nightstands, chairs, and sofas, paying attention to seams, crevices, and tufts.#
  3. Inspect electrical outlets, picture frames, and baseboards, as bed bugs may hide in these areas.
  4. Check your luggage, both inside and outside, before packing and after arriving home. Use a flashlight for a detailed inspection.

  1. Rusty or reddish stains on bedding or mattresses caused by crushed bed bugs.
  2. Dark spots (excrement) on walls, furniture, or bedding.
  3. Tiny white eggs or eggshells, shed skins, or live bed bugs in their various life stages.

Working with Licensed Pest Control Professionals:

Dealing with bed bugs requires expertise, as these pests can quickly multiply and hide in hard-to-reach places. It is strongly advised to consult licensed pest control professionals who have the knowledge and experience to effectively treat bed bug infestations. They employ a range of methods, including chemical treatments and heat treatments, to eradicate the pests and prevent future infestations.

PPMA's Bed Bug Awareness Week Initiatives:

During Bed Bug Awareness Week, the PPMA will utilize its @PestWorld social media platforms to provide informative content, including videos and resources from PestWorld.org. Pest control companies are encouraged to join the awareness initiative by sharing bed bug-related content throughout the week, using the hashtag #BBAW in their posts.

Join also the PestXperience show with Shofu Babalola every Sunday 7-8 PM WAT.

PPMA has also developed a Bed Bug Awareness Week toolkit available for download on PPMAMainframe.org. This toolkit provides pest control companies with customizable press releases, suggested social media content, logos, high-resolution photography, and video content that can be embedded directly on their websites.

Remember, when it comes to bed bugs, prevention and professional intervention are key to maintaining a pest-free environment. Stay informed, spread awareness, and protect yourself from these persistent pests during Bed Bug Awareness Week and beyond.
