In a grand ceremony at the PECAN National Secretariat, NUT Pavilion, NERDC Road, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) celebrated its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. The event showcased a series of achievements, collaborative efforts with regulatory bodies, and the induction of 18 new esteemed members.

Highlights of PECAN's Achievements in 2023:

The AGM commenced with a welcome address by the National President, Mr. Olakunle Williams, who outlined key accomplishments during the past year. Among these achievements were the successful executive elections in November 2022, the publication of members in national dailies for transparency, and active participation in global initiatives such as WORLD Malaria Day and WORLD Pest Day.

The impactful programs executed by PECAN in collaboration with regulatory bodies like LASEPA and EHCON were highlighted. Notable among these was the grand celebration of World Mosquito Day in Abuja, demonstrating the association's dedication to collaborative initiatives in addressing vector-borne diseases.

In August 2023, PECAN collaborated seamlessly with LASEPA and EHCON, taking the battle against mosquitoes to the halls of power in Abuja, commemorating World Mosquito Day. This joint program underscored PECAN's dedication and influence in shaping environmental health practices.

The association's commitment to transparency was evident in the publication of members' names in national dailies, acknowledging their contributions, and showcasing the diversity and expertise within PECAN. Additionally, the strengthening of relationships with regulatory stakeholders, and intensifying collaborations with NAFDAC, EHCON, and others, reinforced PECAN's position as a leading professional body in pest control.

The event also celebrated the approval of 18 new members, scheduled for induction in 2023, reflecting the increasing recognition of PECAN's value and the trust placed in the association by professionals in the pest control industry.

Expert Lectures and Training Sessions:

The AGM featured an enlightening Mandatory Continuous Development Training Programme (MCDTP). Mr. Omotosho, representing LASEPA, delivered a lecture on "Health & Safety in Pest Control Practices," and Dr. (Mrs.) Rametu O. Mamodu, Director of vMAP at NAFDAC, addressed the critical topic of "Handling and Abuse of Pesticides." These sessions provided valuable insights into health, safety, and regulatory aspects of pest control, fostering a culture of continuous learning among industry professionals.

Dr. Cyril Akinyele, representing Professor Amadi, delved into "Pesticides Use, Handling, and Regulatory Framework," covering types and classes of pesticides, pesticide toxicity and poisoning, and management of pesticide poisoning.

 

Product Exhibitions: Showcasing Innovation and Solutions

Several organizations, including Amobile Pest Clean Store, Rotimax LTD, Dfortune Pestshop, and Pest Control Nigeria (PCN), Pesticorp Associates Ltd took the opportunity to showcase their products, ranging from public health pesticides and cleaning equipment to rodenticides and locally manufactured pest control solutions.

Awards and Recognitions: Celebrating Excellence

The AGM concluded with an award ceremony, where the president of PECAN recognized outstanding contributions. A special award was presented to the National General Secretary, Mr. Ayodeji Oluleye, for his immense support and dedication to the growth of the association.

The organizers expressed gratitude to the regulatory bodies, participants, and the organizing committee for their support. The AGM closed on a high note, celebrating the induction of 18 new members, showcasing industry advancements, and reinforcing PECAN's commitment to education, collaboration, and excellence in pest control.
